The Essential Benefits of Reading in our Adult Life

In a world buzzing with distractions and demands, carving out time to sit down with a good book may seem like a luxury reserved for leisurely weekends or vacations. However, beyond the simple pleasure of getting lost in a captivating story, reading offers a plethora of benefits that extend far beyond childhood. It's just as essential for adults to cultivate a reading habit as it is for children. In recent years, I’ve had a lot of LIFE happen and unfortunately, reading remained at the bottom of my “to do” list! Last fall I picked up my first book in 8 years and one chapter in, it was as if my thirst was being quenched after a long literary drought. I didn’t realize what I had been missing. The void in my heart and spirit that the practice of reading was able to fill has become an integral piece in facilitating growth in this next phase of my life.

Mental Stimulation

Just like any other muscle in our body, our brain requires exercise to stay sharp and healthy. Reading provides a workout for the brain, engaging various cognitive functions such as comprehension, critical thinking, and problem-solving. It's a form of mental gymnastics that helps to keep our minds agile and resilient, reducing the risk of cognitive decline as we age.

Stress Reduction

Escaping into the world of a good book can be a powerful stress reliever. It allows us to temporarily detach from our worries and immerse ourselves in a different reality. Research has shown that reading can lower heart rate and cortisol levels, promoting relaxation and overall well-being. It's a form of self-care that offers solace in turbulent times. Having time for yourself and indulging in a good book can make you detach from reality, help you with stress and help you relax!

Expanding Vocabulary and Knowledge

Reading introduces us to new words, ideas, and perspectives, enriching our vocabulary and expanding our understanding of the world. Whether we're delving into fiction or non-fiction, every book exposes us to fresh concepts and information, helping us to become more articulate communicators and informed individuals.

Enhanced Empathy

Literature has the power to transport us into the shoes of characters from diverse backgrounds and experiences. By empathizing with their struggles and triumphs, we develop a deeper understanding of human emotions and motivations. This increased empathy can translate into improved relationships and a greater sense of connection with others in our lives.

Improved Focus and Concentration

In a digital age characterized by constant distractions, reading provides a welcome respite from the barrage of notifications and stimuli. Engaging with a book requires sustained attention and concentration, which can help to sharpen our focus and strengthen our ability to concentrate on tasks in other areas of life.

Unlike passive forms of entertainment such as television or social media, reading is an active process that demands the engagement of our imagination. As we visualize characters, settings, and events described in the text, we exercise our creative faculties and foster a sense of wonder and curiosity.

Books have the power to inspire introspection and personal growth by prompting us to reflect on our own beliefs, values, and experiences. Whether through self-help guides, memoirs, or philosophical treatises, reading can catalyze profound moments of insight and self-discovery, guiding us on our journey towards self-improvement and fulfillment.

Here are some of the books I’ve read in the past few months which I highly recommend! And yes…they are all from the same New York Times Best Selling author Amy Harmon (we’re allowed to have favorites). She is the master of Historical Fiction!

In essence, reading isn't just a pastime reserved for childhood; it's a lifelong pursuit with innumerable benefits for adults as well. So, next time you find yourself reaching for your smartphone or flipping on the television, consider picking up a book instead. Your mind, body, and soul will thank you for it.
